Subscriber Mike G wrote with a question about hard drive partitions, after getting a new computer that was set up strangely: Hi Terry, I thought I understood disks and knew how to partition them. I got a new system with Windows 7 already installed. It has a large partition of about 682 GB in addition […]
New subscriber Jim Boskey wrote to ask a question about active hard drive partitions and Windows. Terry, While a new subscriber, I am not a novice, and have read your articles through PC Pitstop for some time. My career was in programing, and I build and fix PCs as a hobby. However, I have befuddled […]
Almost no matter what our initial thoughts were about an appropriate size for a hard drive, we tend to out-grow them. With today’s huge available hard drive sizes, as well as today’s programming practices, programs are becoming bigger and bigger as well as more bloated with "features" that no one uses. Windows is getting bigger […]
Subscriber Richard Winn wrote for help regarding an older version of Acronis True Image: Hello Terry Whilst backing up the partition, using Acronis TIH ver. 12, can I still use the computer..? Also, I’m somewhat confuse as to the difference between ‘partition’ and ‘image’. All I want to do is to be able to restore […]

First, it enables easy resizing and moving of hard drive partitions, copying a partition, merging partitions, defragment a partition, changing hard drive labels, and, by the way, without destroying your data (you should always back up your […]

When I finally decided it was upgrade time, Dell had decided to join everyone else and stop offering Operating System DVD’s, choosing to supply only pre-built Recovery DVD’s. They tried to get too cute in the order process, so I cancelled my order for a very expensive Dell top-of-the-line desktop-replacement notebook and plans for a smaller Alienware for portable use.
Instead, I saved a fortune by building my own desktop and buying a cheap notebook. I’ve written before about my notebook computer — and how it was a pleasure to be able to find one that was small, light, fast and cheap. All four! (The old adage was that you could pick three of the four.)
Long-time subscriber Lanny Totman wrote to ask for help with a hard drive problem he was having: Hi I have a corrupt file on my system and I cannot get rid of it. I tired to delete it, ran chkdsk, tried unlocker and nothing works. Any idea on how to remove it? Thanks Lanny I […]
Subscriber Mike Gallagher wrote recently to ask about backing up his computer: Hi Terry, I am confused about "backup" your computer. I see all sorts of ads and articles about backing up a computer. Most all of what I see is not a REAL backup. What I mean as a "real backup" is that if […]
