Are your Windows updates completing successfully? Or, are your Windows Updates failing? Apparently the problem is not too uncommon.
As I was thinking about the upcoming update to Windows 10 Creators Update, I wanted to make sure my Win10 computers were up-to-date on their Windows updates.
Unfortunately, I realized that my main notebook had not updated Windows 10 since February 2017, and it was now mid-April.
Microsoft’s Fix Windows Update Errorssupport page also addresses Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, in addition to addressing issues with Windows 10, although the process and solutions are different for each.
More unfortunately, I also realized that I knew that the updates weren’t happening, but that I used the notebook so seldomly that I kept putting off solving the problem.
However, now it was time to do something about the problem…
So, I tried again. And again. Some tweaks, and tried again. No luck at all. Now it was time to do some google searches…
The Windows Update error code I was getting was "Windows Update 0x8024a105 Error Code."
I found my solution at Microsoft’s Fix Windows Update Errors page at
The process was pretty simple:
- First, you select the Windows version you are using. No need to worry (yet) about the release number or Pro vs Enterprise vs Home. I picked Windows 10.
Once you select the OS, step 2 is available. Since I picked windows 10, it gave me a link to the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Unfortunately that didn’t solve the problem.
So, at the end of step 2, there’s a question whether this solved the problem or not. I responded No, and step 3 showed up.
- This step told me to download the latest cumulative update for my version of Windows 10, and gave me a link to the page listing the Windows 10 updates history.
For Windows 7, there is a different process, which appears to date back to the days before the "cumulative updates" that started in late 2016. The Windows 7 Update History page similar to the one linked for Windows 10 is:
After following the procedure for Windows 10 shown on that page, and including manually installing the latest cumulative update, my Windows 10 computer functioned normally.
