This week’s email newsletter articles are:
- Upgrade Time Again
One of the joys/problems/challenges of modern technology is how fast any particular piece of equipment becomes obsolete, or at least less capable of running the latest in software and hardware. Keeping your computer upgraded can be a challenge.
It’s been two years since my last upgrade to my main computer (my desktop). At that point, I replaced a notebook (which had been my primary computer) with a homebuilt desktop computer.
No, it’s not obsolete at that point, but some of[…]
- Keep Control of Your Computer With WinPatrol
WinPatrol is one of my favorite tools for keeping my computer running efficiently, by controlling which programs are allowed to run automatically.
Although it has a number of different capabilities, the most significant from my point of view is that it will show me which programs are set to automatically start up (many more than the few Startup folder on the Start button).
It lets me disable a program from autostarting, without me actually changing the Windows settings. WinPatrol does that — and let’s me enable something I’ve previously disabled (as long as I used WinPatrol to disable it). Of course, Remove is […]

Articles Newly Posted Online
These are new articles this week on my Terry’s Computer Tip web site that were originally part of my email newsletter.
- Reader Wants to Use SSD with Old Motherboard and Windows XP
Recently subscriber Onthony wrote to me to ask about his plans to use a Sold State Drive (SSD) with his Windows XP computer. The idea is that the SSD is tremendously faster than a regular mechanical hard drive.
Hi Terry, I purchased a SATA SSD to replace my C IDE HDD. The WIN OS on the current C drive is WIN2K and my plan was to make the SATA SSD have WINXP PRO SP3 on it. I have since learned that WINXP doesn’t have the drivers […]
- An Email Keeps Being Downloaded Again and Again
Subscriber Jeff Satterwhite wrote to ask about an email problem he was having. Strangely, he didn’t bother to tell me which email program he was using. But, the probable solution wasn’t at his end of the connection:
Terry, I was gone for a couple of weeks and I have a reoccurring email that keeps downloading and won’t let me access any of my other emails. I have confidential emails on this server (roadrunner) and need to get the errant email to stop. I’ve checked and there’s no […]
I love the redesign of my Terry’s Computer Tips web site — it makes article posting and maintenance much easier than before. I’m glad I switched to WordPress and the Genesis Framework. On my Terry’s Computer Tips site, I’m using the base Genesis Framework with a child theme of my own to customize it.
