Terry’s Computer Tips Newsletter – January 22, 2012

This week’s email newsletter articles are:

  • Unable to Delete an IMAP Email Account in Thunderbird
Subscriber Allan Pendlebury wrote to ask for help with a Thunderbird problem he was having:

    Hello Terry

This is driving me nuts. I had gmx.com as an IMAP account in Thunderbird 9.0.1. I deleted my account on line with gmx (too much spam), but do you think I can get rid of it in Thunderbird?

    I have [...]

  • Can’t Send Reduced Size File Attachments
Subscriber Richard Fuller wrote from Australia to ask about a problem he was having in emailing photos…

Hullo Terry, Here’s a problem that’s new to me. When sending photographs by e-mail I always use the Send To > Mail Recipient feature of Windows Explorer to reduce the file size and make the pictures viewable within the mail client window, but this seems to have stopped working. After clicking "Make all my pictures smaller" the Send Mail dialogue shows the files being sent to a new message, but the message window fails to open. [...]

This Week On-Line — New Articles

With my new design of my Terry’s Computer Tips web site, I now publish articles individually rather than as an on-line issue. That also means that I can link directly to the articles, as I’ve done below.

  • Updating Drivers
Subscriber William wrote me to ask about updating his computers’ drivers.

    Tech Tip
What are drivers? They’re software that allows Windows to talk to your computer’s hardware – like the video card, the printer, the USB ports, the Ethernet port…

Hi Terry. Thanks for the newsletter. Please tell me the best way to update drivers. I have a Sony desktop with XP and a laptop [...]

This Week Online — Blast From The Past
Articles Newly Posted Online

These are new articles this week on my Terry’s Computer Tip web site that were originally part of my email newsletter.

  • Preventing Windows Auto-Restarting on System Errors
Ever had a problem where Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 would have an internal problem, flash an error message at you, and immediately reboot while you were trying to figure out what happened?

One of the default settings in Windows is responsible for that automatic reboot. Fortunately, it’s also one that’s easy to change. [...]

  • Power Problems With A Notebook
Subscriber Ken Gibson wrote recently asking for my thoughts to help him diagnose power problems with his laptop:

I have a question. I have an hp laptop about 5 years old. The labtop will not power up. Occasionally it will come on and work well, but then when you try to shut it down it will not do so.

In order to shut it down you have to [...]

I love the redesign of my Terry’s Computer Tips web site — it makes article posting and maintenance much easier than before. I’m glad I switched to WordPress and the Genesis Framework. On my Terry’s Computer Tips site, I’m using the base Genesis Framework without any of their child themes.

Let me know what you think of this article - please post your comment below....

“Can’t Send Reduced Size File Attachments”, doesn’t really make the photo smaller – it displays it smaller, but it is still the same file size and still take up as much bandwidth.

If the photo is only to display on the screen It makes much more sense to really resize it. A typical photo from my camera is 2816 x 2112 pixels. This is bigger than most monitors. I can import it to a Thunderbird email and ‘resize’ it to a manageable size, say 280 x 210 (90% smaller) but it is just being displayed this size. It’s still about a 3 meg file. Really reduce it to 280 x 210 and you have a 28K file that requires much less bandwidth as well as disk space.

Reducing it – really shrinking the file – is easy enough, even in Windows’ Microsoft Paint. Thee is a slew of photo editing programs available that can do this easily.
