Yahoo Web Hosting

When I originally was shopping for a web host, I was looking for a cheaper option than Yahoo Web Hosting. Also, at the time, I don't think that Yahoo! offerend Linux / Apache / MySQL / PHP web hosting servies (also known as LAMP web hosting). Now they provide a number of PHP functions, but not the full set of PHP functions, and they provide MySQL databases, too.

If you are going to use FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or any other package to build your site, the "LAMP" issue is pretty insignificant. Instead, you would look at their cost, reliability, space, email hosting, etc to match to your needs.

Yahoo Web Hosting is one of the biggest web hosting providers. Their name is so well known. They offer eCommerce hosting as well as other hosting for small businesses, large businesses and individuals.

Yahoo web hosting is a good choice for beginners, too, and can be a fairly cheap web hosting alternative, although they are more expensive than my choice Powweb. You can also purchase more advanced hosting packages from them.

Although Yahoo seemed to get its start with the purchase of Geocities web hosting, they have grown to be a large commercial web host.

Domain Name Registration

When I started to change from my ISP's free web hosting to a paid web host, I thought about Yahoo web hosting as one of my options. Yahoo! provides pretty complete service: for domains yahoo could provide them. If or when I picked a domain name yahoo could handle the domain name registration through its affiliated domain name registrar.

I could get enough space and be certain that my site was hosted reliably. I could even be a Google affiliate with the Yahoo web hosting.

However, my basic recommendation is that you purchase and maintain your domain name using a different domain registrar, rather than buying your domain name through your web hosting company. Even if your web hosting company offers a free domain name, I recommend buying the domain name elsewhere.

There are a nummber of companies offering domain registrations. I use and recommend GoDaddy. Another you might want to consider is 1&1. Both GoDaddy and 1&1 also offer web hosting -- and my same "do it elsewhere" recommendation applies to them, too.
