XP Privacy Pro Review - an early look
XP Privacy Pro - an early look
Product: XP Privacy Pro
Class: Privacy; Internet History and Windows History Eraser
License: Commercial product, ddXSoftware Inc.
Version Reviewed: 2.0.2
I've recently downloaded and tried XP Privacy Pro on my notebook.
As with many downloadable products, XP Privacy Pro is available as a free download and will scan for free. It is fully configurable in this unregistered mode. It will also provide details of what it finds without registering.
XP Privacy Pro has three main classifications of the data that for which it will search:
- Web Browser personal/history data,
- Windows System personal/history data, and
- personal/history data in some common programs
I was pleased to see that XP Privacy Pro will handle and delete privacy data from not only Internet Explorer, but also Mozilla Firefox, Opera 8.x+ and Netscape 8.x.
The browser categories that it will scan for personal data include Toolbar Button Applications (applications that actually install as toolbar buttons), Web History, Typed URLs, Temporary Internet Files (Cache), Cookies, Auto-Complete data, and Usernames and Passwords.
Before scanning, you can select any or all the individual web browsers. You can also select any or all the individual categories to be scanned. Similarly, you can select among the Windows System and common programs options.
I discovered one very cool thing — one that I wish WinClear did. After scanning, XP Privacy Pro will list the individual items it found. At that point, I can select or deselect any or all of them.
In other words, I can choose categories before I scan. Then, afterwards, I can see what it found and say "OOPS! I don't what to delete THAT!"
The interface is rather unique and takes a little mental adjustment.
All of the above can be done with the unregistered version. Once you register the program, you can use the program to erase your Windows and Internet history.
One other neat feature is the File and Disk Shredder. XP Privacy Pro gives 4 different levels of shredding and allows shredding of individual files, folders and all free space on a drive.
The license is extremely user friendly. Quoted from the license, "...a non exclusive, non commercial, non transferable, revocable, limited license to the software for use on any personal computer that is owned and operated soley by the Licensee, and/or the legal spouse and/or immediate children of the Licensee."
XP Privacy Pro — The Bottom Line
So, what do I think? I like XP Privacy Pro.
It has the history clearing functions that I want in Firefox and Opera (as well as Netscape and Internet Explorer, which I didn't check), rather than restricting its efforts to Internet Explorer. Of course, it cleans Windows own temporary files, too.
XP Privacy Pro is available by itself, or you can get a great combo deal with XP Repair Pro. Both include 6-months of updates and have "Unlimited software upgrades" as a recommended option.
