Bugs in the Background –
Windows XP, part 2

|
Rather than providing a long, long list, I suggest using the following resources to find out what the individual application, process or "service" does:
- Google, www.google.com -- go to Google and type the file name into the search bar. The response will be links to a number of websites that mention the program. Some of these are obviously appropriate, and others may not be. [Tip – Google is a great place to find out about almost anything, not just computer-related.] Google is your friend – the more you use it, the more you’ll like it. You can set up a Google Searchbar on Internet Explorer. If you run Opera, you can search Google by typing a "g" and the words you are looking for into the URL box.
- PacMan’s Portal -- http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm which is a tutorial on bugs in the background
- AnswersThatWork -- http://www.answersthatwork.com , which has a good reference list of program names – especially of things that run as "processes" instead of "applications".
What about the services that show up in TaskManager as "Processes"? Microsoft XP is more open about letting you know the programs that it runs for its own benefit. By default, some of these are valuable to you, but others are simply wasting time and memory. Some are security holes in their default configurations (remember the FBI commenting about then-new Windows XP’s big hole – that was the "Universal Plug and Play" service. You can change the services to start automatically, to start manually, or to be disabled.
