Windows Scheduled Task Wizard Hangs

This week, subscriber Carol wrote to tell me she was having problems with the Windows Task Scheduler.

Hi Terry, I am unable to use the Scheduled Task Wizard. I open it, but it hangs on the first screen with the hour glass running and doesn't proceed. Any ideas? Thanks.

I wrote back to Carol to say tha, while I didn't know why it was hanging, I could make a suggestion.

Reboot and come up in Safe Mode. If you aren't sure how to do this, just start pressing the F8 keey over and over — every 1/2 to 1 second — as soon as your computer starts its bootup process. This should display a menu were you can pick Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, see if you can start the Scheduled Task Wizard. If it starts, just reboot. If it doesn't start, just reboot. Often, Windows will fix some problems automatically when you boot into Safe Mode.

Reboot back to normal mode and see if you can start the Scheduled Task Manager.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes — and especially how you solve it.

Carol wrote back to tell me how she solved the problem, which may help you, too:

I set aside this afternoon to work with this problem. I'm afraid your Safe Mode solution didn't work. I ran a Check Disk with the Windows disc inserted after prompted to do so. That didn't work either. After much searching around, I came upon a forum where one possible solution was to go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Task Scheduler, and "start the service." It was already "started," but I decided to change the "Startup type" from Automatic to Manual. It's now working! Computers - uffda! Thank you for your prompt reply and help. I always look forward to your newsletters.

Carol
