New subscriber Thorsteinn Thorsteinsson wrote to ask for help in finding a driver for WiFi in his IBM ThinkPad Z60m Type 2531 Win7 Home Premiumn notebook computer:
I am calling you from Iceland, to ask you to find for me this driver which got lost after a HD disaster?
Best Regards TST
My first thought was to point Thorsteinn to the IBM web site, and to suggest that he find the Support section of it.
That’s generally the right answer for finding updated drivers or replacement copies of older versions, if you can’t find your driver CD/DVD.
Then, I remembered that IBM no longer has its PC division. It sold the PC division a couple years ago to Lenovo. Therefore, the right answer was to check Lenovo’s site.
Rather than pointing Thorsteinn directly to the Lenovo site and letting him locate the right section, I decided to try a Google search first.
I searched for:
wireless driver for IBM ThinkPad Z60m Type 2531 Win7.
That turned up the right link, although it was several links down the page — it wasn’t at the top.
Personally, I use PC Pitstop’s PCMatic to keep my drivers up to date. However, I don’t know whether or not it would find a driver for hardware that did not already have a driver installed.
WHen I saw the link to a page on the ThinkPad Z60m at www.lenovo.com, I clicked through to check it out. I found that it had links to a lot of different drivers for that Thinkpad.
So, I wrote back to Thorsteinn to tell him to do a Google search for
wireless driver for IBM ThinkPad Z60m Type 2531 Win7
I advised him to check the Lenovo link in the search results, since Lenovo bought the IBM PC business. I pointed out that he would find links to a lot of drivers for the Z60m on their "Drivers and software – ThinkPad Z60m" page.
