Another Use for Google - Unit Conversions and Currency Conversions
Google has a great little feature that is seldom discussed and unknown to many -- its ability to do unit conversions for you.
Say you wanted to know how many cups are in a gallon? (OK, Rest of the World, the next example is for you!):
* In the Google search bar, enter the following
1 gallon in cups
Google answers with "1 US gallon = 16 US cups"
If you wanted to know how many how many milliliters are in 1.75 liters, you could type in
1.75 liters in milliliters
Google, of ocourse answers with 1750 milliliters (metric makes this kind of conversion easy).
How about a crossover example? Let's convert 1.75 liters to cups:
1.75 liters in cups
Google answers "1.75 liters = 7.39681743 US cups"
Google will also do currency conversions. As of today, Google shows these currency rates:
* 1 GBP in USD "1 British pound = 1.9625 U.S. dollars"
* 1 AUD in USD "1 Australian dollar = 0.7736 U.S. dollars"
* 1 Singapore Dollar in USD "1 Singapore dollar = 0.650152786 U.S. dollars"
Notice the last -- I didn't have to specify the official abbreviation for the currency
Of course, Google has a disclaimer on the currency conversions to remind you that they do not guarantee the accuracy of the conversion, the rates are for informational purposes only and that neither Google nor its information supplier is offering to contract with you for a transaction at the indicated rate. Still, it's a great tool for planning.
My usual sorce for currency conversion information is www.xe.com/ucc . XE has scroll boxes for selecting the "from" currency and the "to" currency, which makes the selection easier if you know the name of the country but not of their currency.
