Subscriber Mike Evans wrote recently with a question about changing from IMAP to POP3 for his email. The IMAP server was responding slowly:
I recently went to wireless internet and by doing so I got rid of Qwest as my internet provider so I had to change emails and went from q.com(POP acct.) to gmail.com(IMAP acct.)
Is there any way to switch my IMAP acct to a POP acct. The IMAP account takes forever to check and download messages. I have windows Live Mail as my email program, Windows XP sp 3 for my operating system, Any help will be appreciated.
I answered Mike’s email to tell him that, as far as his Gmail account is concerned, he can access it via POP3 or via IMAIL, his choice.
I suggested that he check the Gmail Help section for further information — it’s accessed by clicking the cog icon at the top right-hand part of the Gmail screen. The bottom item is Help.
He will also need to change the settings in his email program (Windows Live Mail, in Mike’s case).
Note that some email programs (I haven’t used Windows Live Mail, so I can’t comment on it) won’t let you convert an account from IMAP to POP3. Thunderbird is one that won’t let you convert an account from IMAP to POP3. With Thunderbird, you have to set up a new POP3 account and delete the old IMAP account.
