Speeding Up Windows

After the first phase of this article, I received the following from one of my readers:

Hi Terry,

I am enjoying your newsletter and look forward to each issue. I have recommended your newsletter to several friends and urge them to give it a try for content and help.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and I do not have the “performance and maintenance” listed in my Control Panel. Also, I do not have the side panel you refer to so the view can be changed from Classic to Category. I checked all the menu items and I cannot find how to change the view to the Category view you claim that is necessary in order to use Windows “performance and maintenance” display box.

I even “searched” for “performance”, category view, maintenance, and check add/remove Windows items to see if I missed something when installing Windows XP Pro SP2.

Where to get the “new” Category View? Thanks for your help since we all prefer the best appearance for Window displays.

Cecil

After sending that newsletter, I ran into that exact problem myself on one of my other machines. So, when Cecil wrote, I had an answer all ready.

If you have neither the Category view nor the left-hand side panel, you have one other place you can go to turn it on.

Open up Windows Explorer (right-click on Start, select Explore).

Then Tools, Folder Options. The General tab has an option to “Show common tasks in folders.” Once you select that, you will have the sidebar in Windows Explorer and in the Control Panel.
