Subscriber Carolyn wrote to ask for help solving a problem on her Windows 7 desktop computer — her desktop icons would not stay where she put them…
Terry, I enjoy your website very much! I have a Toshiba laptop and use Windows 7.
I have all my icons on my desktop the way I want and each time I turn on my computer, they are not in the order I want them. I tried going to View etc,but it still moves things.
Do you know a solution? Thanks!
I did a quick Google search for
Toshiba laptop windows 7 icons move
and turned up this link http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-desktop/windows-7-desktop-icons-keep-moving/f6aeb3ae-17cb-4336-bef8-08a68d6a6dd0?page=3 .
Several people were having the problem that Carolyn has. In one case, they solved it by installing the latest Nvidia video card drivers (they were using the default Microsoft driver).
Another point was on the right-click on Desktop and unchecking Align Icons To Grid. Of course, I assume she has already unchecked Auto Arrange Icons, from her comment about View.
A final tip was, after rearranging the Desktop icons, right click and select Refresh. That seems to have solved the issue for some users.

Thanks for your help, Terry — guess I will just live with it.
I had Googled it too and tried these things except for installing the Nvidia. I am not that computer savvy. I sure appreciate you answering me though. Just another of Microsoft’s GREAT ideas!! ha
This never happened with Windows XP — sure wish I still had that instead of Windows 7. (guess us old people are not good with changes)
