Slow Antivirus Scans Solved
Reader Jack Carmena wrote me about some problems he was having with Trend Micro and the scans of his hard drive. Jack had written several weeks ago about the problem and had been concerned that his hard drive might be failing. The story continues...
I just got an email from Trend Micro that my Trend Micro anti virus expires in a week.I wrote back to say that NOD32 is my recommendation for anyone — and the new version is a lot more user-friendly. I've used NOD32 on my Windows computers since late 2003
I opted OUT for auto renewal.
Can/should I get Nod 32 as a replacement through your web site? I have defragged several times and Trend Micro is still taking 5-7 hours to run.
Do you think that is a software or hardware problem?

You can try NOD32 as a 30-day free trial and then decide whether to get it or to get a new Trend Micro. I strongly recommend against just buying a "signature update subscription" if that's what they offer. I think you need program updates too. NOD32's subscription includes both program updates and signature updates.
I also wrote that I suspected that his settings in Trend Micro have changed from a "smart scan" to "scan all files." The smart scans, or whatever TM calls them, scan only the files that are typically used to deliver viruses and malware.

Since deleting Trend Micro and installing ESET NOD 32 anti virus, my computer has sped up dramatically.
Trend Micro must have been dragging it down.
That's one of the reasons that I changed from the big do-everything suites to individual firewall, antivirus and antispyware programs. While the suites are usually priced lower than the individual programs, I've been much more happy with the performance of the individual programs.
