Reader Mohamed Musthafa wrote to ask how to share his Internet connection more effectively:
Please help me. MY problem is i am using my friend s internet connection to use internet , he gave his user name and password also his mac address
i change my computers mac address to his address now i am able to use his connection for free , the only problem is we cant use internet same time if i want use he need to log out. is there any solution to this problem using same mac in 2 computers same time
I wrote back to explain the problem, assuming I correctly understood what Mohamed was doing.
I understand him to say that he is using some program to tell the internet Service Provider that his network card has a specific MAC address, That is normally set in the hardware (the interface card) and is not something you would normally configure.
However, the reason he is doing this is because his Internet Service Provider, actually his friend’s Internet Service Provider, is using the MAC address as part of its connection authorization process.
If he’s using DSL or Cable, then he could use a router to connect to the ISP.
You need a router in order to share a connection. Since he’s having to enter a userID and password, he could have a DSL connection, e.g. PPPOE, that requires log-ins also.
