Subscriber Ken wrote about a problem he was having. ScanDisk, the Windows program that checks the hard drives, was crashing – but restarting every time he reboooted his computer…
I was running a scan disc checkup on the computer I usually use.
The scan apparently has frozen and I cannot get it to shut off to get back on my computer.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
I wrote back to Ken to tell him that you can turn off any modern PC, including notebooks and netbooks, by holding the power button down for 8-10 seconds to trip the power shutoff circuit in the power supply.
Then, wait 15 seconds or so. At that point, you can press the power button to turn on the computer again..
Ken wrote a followup email:
I have done all of this but when it powers back on it starts the scan disc all over again and I have not been able for it to complete the scan.
It seems to freeze up before it will completely scan.
At that point, I had two suggestions:
1) Ken could try rebooting into Safe Mode and see if that solves it.
2) If that didn’t solve it, he should try searching Google for a hint. I’d search for
how to stop scan disk in Windows ___ (identifying whichever Windows version he was using – XP, Vista or 7).
