Remote Access to Your Computer

There are a few alternatives for local remote access to your computer -- local as in, from my notebook at home to my home theater PC.
For that service, and to access my other home computers behind my firewall, I use RealVNC. There are now encrypted forms of RealVNC available, but at a fairly high price if you're looking for a home/personal solution.
Unfortunately, RealVNC also takes some fine tuning and is not for everyone. More importantly, it is not secure for access from elsewhere on the Internet, although they have some other versions. Any transmission could be intercepted, so if I was using my notebook from a hotel room and wanted to access my home PC or my office PC, I would want to use a secure service.
