Subscriber Wanda Armstrong wrote recently to ask for help in installing the driver software for her new photo printer:
I have a HP Photosmart 7760 printer. (NO disk) I found the program and driver file download at HP site. I am running XP Prof.
I have tried multiple times to install the file and it sticks or hangs at 31% every time. How do I get this problem solved?
Don’t know if this would have anything to do with the stall or not but I had HP 4400 printer connected for a while I didn’t uninstall that program or driver.
of NO HELP on this_ Can you please advise a fix for this problem?
Thanks a Bunch! Wanda
I wrote back to Wanda to suggest that she try shutting down all the other programs, except her firewall and antivirus, when she installs. She may have some particular program running in the background that’s interfering.
Also, I reminded her that HP requires you to start running the driver installation program and then, when the program tells you to, you connect the printer to the computer using the USB cable. If you hook up the printer ahead of time, the software won’t install properly.
In case she had connected the printer too early and Windows had set up the non-functioning device in Device Manager, I told her how to solve that.
If this is the problem, start Windows XP, hook up the printer, and then open Start > Control Panel > Device Manager. Find the printer listed — it will probably have a yellow warning triangle next to its entry — and delete the printer (Windows will call this "uninstalling" or removing the device. Disconnect the printer. Reboot. Then, try your software installation again.
Unfortunately, that didn’t solve Wanda’s problem:
Terry, it still didn’t work. This is really beginning to be a royal pain! Any other suggestions to try? I REALLY need this printer up and at it!
So, I asked her why she was having to reinstall the printer software on this Windows XP computer?
I’m not sure if this is the problem, but I reminded her that she’s trying to install a 2004 version of printer/printer-driver software on a Windows XP computer that, presumably, has gotten all the security fixes of SP1, SP2, SP3 and subsequent fixes. Some of those internal changes in Windows XP may be the source of your problems. Or, they might not be.
I asked her if she could install the software while running Windows XP in Safe Mode? I suspect that she won’t be able to, but it’s definitely worth a try.
I bought the printer from a friend (who has no idea where the program disk is) but assured me I could download it from the web. My pc came with Vista installed on it, but I didn’t care for Vista so I had XP Prof. installed on it. Yes, as far as I know it has all of it’s updates.
After running all night it is on 42%. At this rate it will probably take 2 weeks to complete. I am the type of person that doesn’t give up easily, so I guess the fight is on! I will try safe mode if this fails.
PS: If you happen to think of anything else to try, PLEASE let me know.
