Do you want security software pre-installed on your computer?
That’s the basic question from long-time subscriber Richard Fuller:
This probably falls under the heading of "daft questions", but as someone who regards computers as most people do their cars (ie. I don’t care what goes on under the bonnet so long as it works) I’d appreciate your advice.
The new computer I’m considering buying from a local supplier includes Microsoft Security Essentials, which as far as I can see is MS’s (probably fairly ineffectual) anti-virus/-malware/firewall, etc. However, I’ve been with Sunbelt or whatever it’s called these days since it was known as Kerio, and am currently subscribed to VIPRE until 2015, so can I safely ask the supplier not to install MSE?
I’ve used MailWasher for ten years, so that covers the e-mail side of things.
Is there anything MSE will do that my current security arrangements won’t " besides conflict with them?
With thanks for your help,
The real answer to Richard’s first question is "it depends."
I’m not trying to duck the question — the answer depends on what preparation the supplier is going to do on the computer, for example, whether he’s going to connect to the Internet and get all the Windows Updates.
In other words, you may want to let the supplier install Windows Security Essentials. It won’t hurt anything (as long as you uninstall it before you install your antivirus/antimalware program of your choice (VIPRE).
Then, once you take delivery of the new computer, you can the pre-installed security software and uninstall your preferred security software.
Just a little tip: if you’re not going to use the pre-installed security software, you should uninstall it. Even if you turn off the continually-running components, its features can mess up your networking.
I ran into that problem a couple years ago, where a pre-installed Norton package let the computer get to the Internet, but it couldn’t access the rest of the local (home) network. The user had never activated the Norton software, either. However, once Norton was uninstalled, everything worked.
