Outlook Express Links Don't Work
I received an interesting question from subscriber Maria. She has been using Firefox, as many people do, including me. In this case, she had just upgraded her Internet Explorer to IE7 and was having problems with Outlook Express.
Maria wrote:
Terry, I currently have Fire Fox and Internet Explorer on my computer. I just added the Internet Explorer as a browser after removing it some time ago. Outlook Express is my default email handler. The problem is that in Outlook Express the links don't open since I added Internet Explorer. [Tech guy] at [a local computer shop] says that it seams like the two are competing I am hoping that you have some ideas as I have tried a few from a Google search.
Fortunately for Maria, I had seen this problem before and thought I knew the answer.
Internet Explorer 7 messes up Outlook Express' settings if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser when it is installed.
The fix is simple, but will also destroy any special settings that you've changed in Internet Explorer. For example, if you changed Active-X to "prompt" instead of automatically run, you'll lose that setting and have to change it again.
Anyway, the steps to fix Outlook Express are straight forward. I wrote back to Maria to tell her:
When you reinstalled IE, did you do it as IE6 or IE7?
If you installed IE7, you can do an IE repair which should solve the problem --
1) Open Internet Explorer 7
2) From the menu bar, select Tools > Options
3) In the Internet Options dialog box that opens, click on the Advanced tab
4) Near the bottom, in the section that says "Reset Internet Explorer settings", click the Reset... button.
If you had customized any IE settings, you will have to make your changes again.
Let me know if this solves it...
She wrote back quickly to say:
I did have IE7. After working on this for 1 week you solved my problem in 10 seconds. Thanks and I will give you a big hug next time I see you at Cajun Clickers.
For those of you who don't know, the Cajun Clickers Computer Club is our Baton Rouge computer club ( www.clickers.org ). There are about 1,500 member families of the club and we have from 40-60 educational events per month — and it's an all-volunteer organization.
