OpenOffice 3.0 Installation Issues

Subscriber and friend Ron Spruell wrote about a problem he had with the new OpenOffice 3.0. The problem occurred with one of the free antivirus programs, so this may be of particular interest to many readers:

OpenOffice 3.0 Problems: Terry — I tried Oo 3.O. I did not uninstall 2.4 first. Oo 3.O increased my CPU usage to 80% to 100%. My computer would barely run. I had to uninstall and go back to 2.4. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Would a clean install solve my problems. BTW, I love Oo. I find Writer much easier that MSWord. Calc has a few short comings. I use Impress for all presentations. I never did learn how to use Power Point. Ron Spruell

I wrote back to Ron to tell him that I had not heard or read about any problem before seeing his email. I asked if he used Process Explorer or Task Manager to see which application was bouncing to 100%. I had my av bounce to 95% during the install, which is why I disabled it for the install. When I re-enabled it, I had no problems.

I uninstalled 2.4 first, before installing OpenOffice 3.0 — I'm not sure why, but I did — and all was well.

It turns out the problem was installing Oo 3.0 with the AVG free Resident Shield running. Oo installed OK, but soffice.exe would use 95-98% of the CPU as measured by Process Explorer.
So here are the steps I went through:
Installed Oo 3.0 without uninstalling Oo 2.4. soffice.exe, 95-98% of processor.
Uninstalled Oo 3.0 and installed Oo 2.4
Ran OK (normal)
Uninstalled Oo 2.4
Rebooted
Installed Oo 3.0. soffice.exe 95-98% of processor.
Uninstalled Oo 3.0.
Rebooted
Turned off the Resident Shield in AVG 8.0 free
Installed Oo 3.0, ran normal.
Activated Resident Shield.
Oo 3.0 still runs normal.

That's an interesting development with OpenOffice 3 — I had issues during the install, while Ron had issues after his install was completed. Both were solved by turning off the antivirus during the installation. This isn't really a good thing to do, though.
