After my recent article about WinPatrol, long-time subscriber Al Soroka wrote about his experience with WinPatrol and WinPatrol Plus — and how they had helped protect his computer:
I followed your recommendation last year and purchased & installed WinPatrol Plus. Earlier this year I purchased a new Kodak AIO printer and as part of their online software installation I ended up with an undocumented boot file, conime.exe.
I emailed the Kodak tech people whose response was evasive, confusing and so circuitous that I had to ask different Kodak departments 4 times before I learned that they claimed no connection with this conime.exe file, even though it could only have come from the Kodak site.
WinPatrol kept flagging it and I learned from WP Plus that it might be a trojan virus file. I tried without success to remove it and finally disabled it, preventing it from booting by using WinPatrol. Disabling the file appears to have had no impact on any of my programs or printing so I’m convinced it was some kind of intrusive program.
Without WinPatrol I’d have had no defence against this program.
