Microsoft Word Normal.dot Template

There is a special template file in Microsoft Word that is used as the default template. All you have to do is to open Microsoft Word, and it will open and display a blank document so you can start typing in it.

This template is named Normal.dot

Similarly, if you click on the New Document icon, Normal.dot will be used to set up the new document.

This can be a very powerful way to change the behaviour of your Word installation. Do you want to use a different font, different font size, different font color, different margins, fixed text on every document you create? Just make the changes in your blank document and then save it as Normal.dot.

You'll have to save your new Normal.dot template file in a special place, though -- and the place will be unique to each userID on your computer. If you want to have shared templates with other users on your network Workgroup, there's also a place for that.

The default location for your Word templates is C:\Documents and Settings\[yourUserID]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

That's where your copy of Normal.dot is found. If you want to change the default location for your userID's use of Word, you can change that under Tools, Options, File Locations. Similarly, this is where you can set your Workgroup template directory, if you want one.

There's one special thing to know about Normal.dot. If your Normal.dot file becomes corrupted, Microsoft Word will not be able to open! Even uninstalling and reinstalling will not solve the problem, because the uninstall won't remove the modified Normal.dot file.

The fix is simple. Find Normal.dot (the easy way is to use the Windows Search function, but be sure to also select the Search In Hidden Files and Folders option, because these folders are hidden.

Once you find your Normal.dot file, just delete it. When you start Word, it will create the Normal.dot file from default values stored in the program.
