Microsoft Word Defaults
When I use Microsoft Word, there are a number of default options that I do not like — and immediately change when I get a new computer.
First, there's the lack of Save As and Print To buttons on the icon bar. While I _may_ want to print to my default printer, I often want to choose a real printer.
[My default printer is Click2PDF, which automatically combines multiple "prints" into one PDF -- even Adobe Acrobat Professional doesn't do that! I use it routinely for documenting the purchases I make on the web, whether from Amazon, CompUSA, Clickbank or other vendors.]

Another default that I don't like is the View that is selected in Word. Word gives us five (5) choices for document viewing: Normal View, Web Layout View, Print Layout View, Outline View and Reader View. For some strange reason, the default was Reader View.
I prefer Print Layout View, which gives me rulers across the top and down the left site of the document (they're in the margins and will not show in the document). This lets me set tabs and check — and adjust — page breaks easily.
There's an old saying "Give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll feed himself for life."
Rather than me giving you this procedure, I'll show you how to find the answer in the excellent help files in Microsoft Word 2003:
- Open Word 2003,
- Go to Help, Microsoft Office Word Help
- "default print layout view" in the search bar.
You'll find the answer very easily — the 2rd item down is "Turn off reader view". It has two sections — turning it off now and preventing it from starting.
