"Microsoft Update" versus Windows Update
Reader Chet Zaoski wrote :
Terry,
What's up with the "New! Get Microsoft Update Today!" listed on the Microsoft Update site? I have not seen this before during previous updates. You are still able to do the "normal" update procedure but this looks like Microsoft may be trying to add other items to your download.
Thanks,
Chet
Good question, Chet. It's time for another article on Microsoft Update and why we should be using it.
Although Microsoft has been recommending that users switch from Windows Updates to Microsoft Updates since mid-2005, new computers from at least one major manufacturer are still being shipped with Windows Update and not Microsoft Update
By the way, I hope you're already running it instead of Windows Update. I wrote about it in my July 18th newsletter last year and another time since then.
The key reason to use Microsoft Updates:
- Windows Update updates Windows.
- Office Update updates Office.
- Other update programs at Microsoft update other Microsoft programs.
- Microsoft Update updates them all
Most people don't ever do anything except Windows Updates (if they even do them!), so they miss all the function and security updates for Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and other Microsoft products (Project, Visio, etc).
More importantly, those other programs have security bugs, too, and they're missing critical security patches.
Microsoft Update is a "One Stop Shop" for all updates to all Microsoft software.
