Subscriber Keith Fowler wrote about his new problem with Microsoft Outlook — it won’t quit!
I have a problem with my Outlook (Office 2003 version) not exiting properly.
It is a new problem – it has not behaved like this before now (it has been installed on this pc for over 2 years).
Basically when I click on the little red X in the top right hand corner it seems to close down but it doesn’t it just sits in the background and you can see the outlook logo in the system tray at the bottom right hand corner forever !!
Whilst its doing this it still downloads emails. Please note that it is not selected to do such tasks whilst off line. I have checked that this option is not selected.
The only way I can stop this going on is to go into Windows Task Manager and then in Processes select `end task` – which of course is not a good idea at all.
Please also note that in Windows Task Manager Outlook is not featured in the list of Applications running so why it is still performing tasks I do not know.
Got any ideas of how I can correct this ?
Please also note that I have also tried performing the usual detect and repair but this doesn’t help either.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have a solution for Keith. I suggested that he could try uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook (or, perhaps, all of Office 2003).
One thought was that he might be starting Outlook and then trying to shut it down while Outlook is still downloading emails. When Outlook starts, by default, it immediately tries to download emails. It might not stop while it’s downloading the emails. The main user program may close, but Outlook may continue to download the emails via a background process.
I haven’t seen the problem Keith is experiencing, and I don’t have any computers still running Office 2003, so I can’t experiment.
Thanks for getting back.
I have of course considered an uninstall and reinstall but I don’t relish the pain of having to set up all my email addresses again plus all the settings and the address book plus signatures etc !! That all takes ages to accomplish !!
I usually wait until its well finished sending / receiving emails before shutting down so its not that which is causing this – its is ALWAYS suffering from this problem of not shutting down properly.
Not to worry… I’m sure it will get sorted somehow…

Regarding Keith’s comment about having to re-enter all his email addresses and settings, he’ll find that they’re stored in the Outlook.pst file. It’s easy to back up your Outlook data (just copy the file), and to import it again into the new installation.
