Looking for Free Software?
One of the main reasons for subscribing to newsletters and mailing lists is that you can learn from others.
This week, via one of the mailing lists, I learned about a site that features free open-source software for Windows.
It's a site that is focused on identifying free open-source alternatives to "paid" programs for Windows. It's not a download site. It links to the individual sites where you can download these programs.
Quoting the site:
About this Site Open Source Windows is a simple list of the best free and open source software for Windows. We aren't trying to be a comprehensive listing of every open-source Windows application, instead we want to showcase the best, most important, and easiest to use. This page should be a handy reference and a useful tool for getting more people to start using free and open-source software. If you think we're missing any great apps, please let us know.
This site has identified a wide range of free, open-source software for Windows, including things like web browsers, a 3-D graphics program, games, your own planetarium on your computer, a file eraser, personal finance program, notetaking programs, and a lot more.
I have one thing about the site that I did not like. The site links directly to the download page for the various programs. In some cases, it links to download pages for specific versions. I think it should link to each program's home page.
Many of these programs were originally written for Linux and have now been "ported" to Windows, giving many more people the opportunity to run free, open-source software.
