Internet Security for Normal Users - Followup
Following up on my >Internet Security for Normal Users article i, subscriber John in California wrote to say:
Hi Terry! In your Nov. 9 Newsletter, you stated that you didn't know of any free Anti-Spyware app that offered real time protection. I know of one that you may want to tell your readers about. It is called Spyware Terminator ( http://www.spywareterminator.com/ ). Now, although I haven't used it for quite some time and cannot give it an endorsement, your readers who cannot afford another option may want to consider this. It is given 4 out of 5 stars by both the editors and users at Download.com. When I used it, the real time protection relied mostly on heuristics for detection. (Heuristic detection is a rule-based method of identifying new viruses. This method of scanning does not rely on specific virus signatures. The advantage of the heuristic scan is that it is not fooled by a new variant of an existing virus. However, it might occasionally report suspicious code in normal programs.) Even if it is not rated the best in detection or removal, Spyware Terminator, your readers may want to consider this app as a "better than nothing" solution until they can get something better, or if they like it, a long term free solution.
Thanks, John. I'll stay with my antispyware choice (Vipre). I know there are a lot of people who choose " free or nothing," and I do recommend one free program for security (PopFile for anti-spam), but I feel that my security is better with good commercial security programs.
