Sometimes, the problem is strange and intermittent — and the solution seems to defy logic.
Such was the problem that subscriber Al Soroka had:
My USB connection to my Canon i80 printer is on again, off again. I can reliably use the IR connection with an old laptop, but my newer Dell Studio laptop running XP unpredictably does not recognize the printer, telling me its offline when I know its on. What to do?
I wrote back to Al to say that I had not seen a problem like that and didn’t have a solution for him.
I suggested that he try searching Google for the problem and answer.
If that doesn’t work, I suggested that he go to http://www.google.com/groups and search. Google Groups has a good archive of Usenet as well as having its own unique message groups. You can find answers in Usenet and Google Groups that never make it to web pages.
Al wrote back to say that he had solved the problem and share the solution:
Problem solved. The cable was haywire, maybe frayed or broken w/in the plastic flex covering. New printer cable and all is well.
