Subscriber Janet Walker wrote asking how she could solve some newly-developed problems with her all-in-one printer/scanner/fax:
I have Windows XP and I have a HP printer all in one.
All of a sudden when I click on my desktop to scan something on the HP Solution Center, it does not show that it will scan or copy anymore, it just shows print.
I called them but they want money to tell me how to fix it. It’s out of warranty or something, but I think it should still work.
Could I delete it all off using add & remove programs, and re down load it with my disk that came with it? I really need my scanner because of a house I own with my siblings and I have to scan them the rent statements.
It will still scan using Scanner and Camera Wizard from Microsoft, but I can’t make anything darker, or smaller to fit the screen using the Microsoft one.
I wrote back to Janet to tell her that her suggestion sounds reasonable, but is a little tricky with HP devices.
After uninstalling the existing software using Add-Remove Programs, she’d probably need to open Control Panel > System > Device Manager in order to "remove" the HP device (and it may be listed multiple times because of its multiple functions).
Then unplug the USB cable from the HP Alll-in-One (remember that HP instructions usually say "don’t plug in the device’s USB cable until the CD tells you to plug it in."
Now you should be able to reinstall the software
Another thought is that the scanner portion of the all-in-one may have died for some reason. You could be looking at a hardware problem.
Janet apparently was also asking the same question from someone else, too — apparently gave her the same answers. She solved the problem and wrote:
I used both these ideas, and thanks to you both, I have the HP Solution Center back on and working. Just like it used to.
