Searching for a Last Minute Christmas Gift?
Start at Amazon.com — that’s what I did…
With Amazon’s Amazon Prime fast delivery service, you can get free 2-day delivery and very inexpensive next-day delivery for products sold by Amazon with the Amazon Prime service. Annual membership, Fast shipping, No minimums, wide selection. You can even include up to 4 accounts in your household at no additional charge.
Even better, Amazon offers an Amazon Prime 30-day Free Trial. Try Amazon Prime free for one month — Unlimited FREE Two-Day Shipping, No minimum order size, Upgrades to One-Day shipping for $3.99/item, After your free trial, Amazon Prime is just $79/year.
I’ve found that the orders get shipped faster, too, as well as getting two-day shipping on the orders. Most of my orders ship the next day, while they tended to be shipped in 3-4 days when I elected the non-Amazon Prime free shipping (there’s a free shipping option for most orders over $25 for products sold by Amazon itself, even without Amazon Prime). So, when I order in the evening, with my Amazon Prime membership, I usually see shipment the next day with delivery two business days later. Nice.
So, with fast out-the-door and fast shipping, what are some great ideas?
Times are changing…Electronics are getting better and faster as well as cheaper.
Just because I had a cable modem that worked fine didn’t mean that I was getting the fastest service that I was paying for. That’s what I found when I upgraded from a DOCSIS 2.0 to a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem. I thought I was just buying ahead for the future, so I could upgrade my cable service. I had no idea that my cable modem wasn’t as fast as the service I was paying for. I picked the Motorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem. Read the reviews.
I upgraded my wireless router from a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router, which does 802.11b/g and has 4 10/100 Ethernet ports for a local network, to a Cisco-Linksys E3000 High-Performance Wireless-N Router, which does 802.11b/g/n and has 4 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports – that’s right – Gigabit Ethernet! All of a sudden, I found that I had Gigabit Ethernet networking on my home network (at least to those computers that supported Gigabit Ethernet and were hooked directly to the new router. Once I changed an additional 10/100 5-port switch to a 10/100/1000 8-port switch (Cisco-Linksys EG008W Gigabit 8-Port Workgroup Switch) and added a Gigabit Ethernet card (like the Cisco-Linksys EG1032 Instant Gigabit Desktop Network Adapter) to a computer that didn’t have built-in 10/100/1000 networking, I had Gigabit speeds across my whole home network. COOL!
What about the small stuff?
I like and use the Imation Clip 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive for less than $20. Not only is it a cool form factor (with the carbiner clip), it has a physical write protect switch and can be configured to have both public (non-password-protected) and secure (password-protected) partitions on the flash drive.
Backing up is always important. I just bought the Western Digital My Book Essential 2 TB USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive. Yes, it does USB 2.0 that almost everyone has today, plus it does the new, much faster USB 3.0, too. Read the reviews.
Your computer doesn’t have a USB 3.0 connection? Add one easily with a usb 3.0 pci card.
Don’t forget – this is a great time to try the Amazon Prime 30-day Free Trial to get really fast out-the-door shipping and delivery.
