Eudora to Become Open-Source

The final commercial version of my favorite email program Eudora was issued during the week of October 15, 2007. We finally got a new version, updating from v7.01 to 7.1.0.9.

There was another piece of good news — in plain sight — further down the web page at www.Eudora.com. Qualcomm, the phone manufacturer, has finally decided to release Eudora to the Open Source community!

Eudora is scheduled to become open source software, meaning anyone who wants can edit it and change it, in the first half of 2007.

Quoting the Eudora.com web site:

Eudora® email moves to open source development and delivers final commercial version — Eudora 7.1 for Windows and 6.2.4 for Mac OSX.

The open source version of EudoraŽ is targeted to be released during the first half of calendar year 2007 and will be free of charge. Once the open source version of Eudora is released, QUALCOMM will cease to sell Eudora commercially. Until then, the current commercial versions are available for the reduced price of $19.95 with a six-month period of technical support. All prior technical support commitments continue to be honored.

Features: Eudora 7.1 for Windows® OS
What's included for $19.95? NOTHING -- Eudora is FREE now!

This is great news. Eudora had and has three licensing models: paid ($40 per year!), advertising supported (a small image ad displayed in the Eudora window), and a completely free, fewer-functions light mode.

The Paid mode has some additional features that are not in the Sponsored mode. At this closeout price, Eudora users may wish to purchase the $19.95 license. The FAQ says: "Users can remain in any version of Paid mode in perpetuity."
