Could you please solve a problem for me that no one at Microsoft or HP seem to know anything about.
Windows Media player became corrupt. I uninstalled it and proceeded to reinstall it. At one point I got
the message, "Enter Windows Validation Code."
No one seems to know what this code is. It must be
some place since it asked for it. Any suggestions?
I wrote back to Joe to suggest that he had probably downloaded the file from microsoft.com using something other than Internet Explorer.
Microsoft has started making free software available to licensed Windows users only. When you try to download a program, their website often requires that you let their software test to make sure your Windows copy is legitimate.
That can happen pretty much automatically with an Active-X "control" (really a cute, misleading name for a program) when you use Internet Explorer, although you are able to control whether the test is done or not.
If you don’t use Internet Explorer when you try to download programs from microsoft.com, you get a different result.
If you use Firefox, for example, instead of Internet Explorer, Microsoft requires you to download a special Windows validation program and run it, and then provide them with the resulting code in order to download the program.
Joe’s experience indicates to me that he may have to enter the code again, when he starts the actual installation.
Alternatively, he might have downloaded the program sometime in the past, and be trying to install it from that earlier download. In that case, he’s running into the same test.
I suggested that the easiest solution was to use Internet Explorer to visit www.microsoft.com and download the program again.
Although I don’t use Internet Explorer on my own personal computers for normal web browsing (I use Firefox), I always use Internet Explorer when I go to www.microsoft.com.
