Cell Phone "Do Not Call" Hoax
Several people have forwarded to me a warning that our cell phone numbers are about to be made public and available to telemarketers.
When you get something like this, always check with www.snopes.com or www.urbanlegends.com to see. In one case, the email even quoted a valid web page at Snopes.com, but that one was saying that there actually IS a Do Not Call list for phones. But, if you searched Snopes.com for "cell phones" you would find the lsiting for the cell phone number hoax.
The Federal Telecommunications Commission (FTC) is the U.S. body that regulates telemarketing. Quoting the home page at www.ftc.gov,
Cell Phones
You may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.
You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. Federal Communications Commission regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers.
The "Frequently Asked Sections at www.donotcall.gov has the same answer for the question "can I register my cell phone." It also adds the sentence that should have also been on the FTC home page. That sentence reads: "Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don’t call consumers on their cell phones without their consent."
