Buying a Cable Modem, Part 3 -
So, How Was It?

The big surprise was the greatly improved response time. I don't know if this is a result of the new cable modem itself, the change to a DHCP-assigned IP address, or the dramatic change in the subnet mask due to the way Cox@Home had split up its network. I suspect the last of these.
My subnet mask changed from 255.255.248.0 (meaning that there were up to 1790 computers on this subnetwork) to 255.255.255.128 (meaning up to 126 computers on this subnet), when I went from the static IP address to the dynamically assigned one. Cool, this means that the maximum number of computers connecting to one network card on the cable Internet provider's server just dropped by over 1600! This ought to help the performance, especially during the 7pm-9pm peak load.
My "ping" time has dropped significantly. Before the change, my typical ping time to ftp.cdrom.com was about 220ms. Now, it's 60-70ms. Given the number of packets and responses sent on a TCP/IP request (e.g., getting a new web page), this translates into a noticeable performance increase.
I like this.
