AVG definitions update download is corrupted & it won’t install and AVG won’t uninstall.
Subscriber John Meyer wrote with an AVG problem (not the bad definitions problem) to ask:
Been running AVG Free for many years. Upgraded to 2011 Version some time ago and been updating very frequently. Earlier this week when I tried to update, received ERROR MESSAGE (Update Failed, General Error).
Repeated update tries have also failed. Was advised to uninstall and then reinstall the 2011 version. However, when I try to uninstall, that also fails. Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.
PS I’m also getting an error message that says “the file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by … I have 14 of those messages.
I wrote back to John to say that I haven’t used AVG Free in years, but I could guess at some possible answers. I use VIPRE Antivirus Premium on all my Windows computers and my family’s computers – the Unlimited Site License is a great option.
It sounds like his downloaded update is corrupted. He tried to uninstall, which is what I would have suggested, and that failed.
While there are uninstall programs like RevoUninstaller, I don’t know if they are appropriate for an antivirus program, as it hooks deeply into the operating system to prevent malware from uninstalling it.
Here’s a thought that sometimes solves issues: boot into Safe Mode, let it complete the boot process, but do not do any other functions in Safe Mode. Immediately reboot into normal Windows mode. Safe Mode apparently resets some things in Windows as well as preventing some things from running.
You probably would not be able to install the updates while within Safe Mode (even Safe Mode with Networking), but he could try that.
I also asked him to let me know how he solves the problem.
