Welcome to the Terry's Computer Tips newsletter. The newsletter itself is now an online document that you read with your web browser. The free, emailed newsletter is an announcement that a new issue has been published. The emailed newsletter is sent weekly to individuals who have subscribed to the newsletter, have received an email confirmation notice that required them to confirm their subscription request, and who confirmed their request.
1. Announcement — new JUST FOR SUBSCRIBERS section!
"Now that the Terry's Computer Tips newsletter is published online, why should I subscribe to the email newsletter?
The obvious answer: is so that you get a notice and link to the new issue when it is published -- you can be one of the first to see it! You also get a "Table of Contents" for the issue, so you know what is going to be there.
The not-so-obvious answer is that the emailed newsletter will have the exclusive "Article 0" -- a special article for subscribers only.
"Article 0" will not be published in that week's online newsletter -- and may never be! It will be sent to the subscribers only, as part of the emailed newsletter. Eventually, the information may find its way into another issue or a web site article. Or, it might not...

2. Updates This Week
Microsoft: Last week included October's "Patch Tuesday," which brought a plethora of patches for Windows and related products. Hopefully you have Windows XP set to automatically download and install updates, or at least to automatically download updates and notify you to install them (I like this option because I like to know a change has occurred -- it's helpful if the update broke some other application).
If you have kept your Windowx XP system up to date, you get the following updates:
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB905414) -- fixes a denial of service issue with the Network Manager service
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB904706) -- fixes a remote compromise of the DirectShow code that could allow an attacker to gain control over your computerc
- Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool -- the monthly release of a tool that removes certain specific malicious programs, including the Blaster, Sasser and Mydoom worms
- Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB896688) -- the right way to do updates, this fixes all to date, rather than making you run updates over and over
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB902400) -- fixes a remove code execution issue that could allow someone to gain control over your computer
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB899589) - fixes a security issue in the Clicent Service for NetWare (which you have if you are using IPX/SPX protocols for gaming with machines on your local network) -- this is another remove control issue
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB900715) - fixes a security problem regarding authenticated useers, which could lead to a compromised system
- Security Update for Windows XP (KB905749) - fixes a security issue in the Plug and Play service that could allow an attacker to compromise and gain oontrol over your computer
