3.  Updates This Week:  Firefox v1.06, Microsoft AntiSpyware v1.0.615

Firefox v1.06 -- About a week after v1.05 was released, the Mozilla Foundation released version 1.06.  You can download it at http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox .

There are no new security fixes in v1.06 -- they were all in v1.05.  However, 1.05 broke some of the "extensions" that people have installed in Firefox, so 1.06 restores them.

Extensions are additional programs that add functionality to Firefox or change the way it works.  You can find many of them via the Tools / Extensions menu item.  Once the window opens, click in the bottom right-hand corner where it says "Get More Extensions."  This Tools / Extensions menu window is where you can also delete any extensions you need to.

Instructions for v1.06 -- if you installed v1.05, you can just double-click and install over the existing version.  If you haven't already installed 1.06, you probably ought to follow the instructions for 1.05 -- which are to uninstall Firefox and then install the new version.  Firefox's uninstall will not delete your user profile (bookmarks, cookies, history, and extensions).

Microsoft AntiSpyware v1.0.615 shows up almost automatically, if you have your Microsoft AntiSpyware set to do automatic updates.  This is a good thing.  Automatic changes of the spyware signatures, the strings of characters by which the program recognizes spyware, are just fine and the recommended way to go.  If you are not running Microsoft Antispyware, you can download the beta version for free.  Microsoft has announced that the final product will be free, although they will charge for a network-administrator version targeted at businesses.

I'm glad to see that program updates are treated differently -- you get a notice from the Windows Status Bar that there is a new program version available and an opportunity to download and install it.

That way, if anything goes wrong, you know that a change has been made.  Whether you are the one trying to solve a computer problem or you are paying someone else to do it, knowing that "I installed so-and-so and now I can't _____ "(fill in the blank -- get to the Internet, run Word, open my email program, whatever) helps to solve the problem.

4.  Feedback Request:  Is there life out there?

This is the sixth issue of Terry's Computer Tips.  Is anyone reading them?

Send me your comments on the newsletters. What do you like?  What do you not like?  How can I improve the newletter?

How about my Terry's Computer Tips website?  Again -- likes, don't likes, and recommendations.

Make it easy on me to write the newsletter -- send me your questions. It is far easier to answer a question than it is to find a topic for an article.

5.  Shareware/Freeware Pick of the Week

Program:   Moraff's MarbleJongg
Category:  Game

My Shareware/Freeware Pick of the Week is the game Moraff's MarbleJongg from Software Diversions, Inc.

This diversion is a matching game based MahJongg.  You match pairs of colored, decorated globes and they will vanish.  As long as there is a move available, the game will continue -- look for it, or use the Hint function if you need help.

When you are out of moves, that is, when one ball of each pair is blocked from access by others above or to all sides, then the program will pop up a notice that there are no moves and offer to shuffle the balls.  Do it.

This is one game where there is nice music in the background and the sounds are not obnoxious.  Try animating the ball.  You can choose to spin them or a more random motion.

Moraff's MarbleJongg is great in its freeware incarnation.  Software Diversions also has enhanced versions available for purchase, including multiple layouts and multiple tilesets.

Check out Moraff's MarbleJongg for those times when you need a little relief from stress.
