7.  BlackViper is Back

Subscriber Tom Linton wrote about the Speeding Up Windows XP - Reducing the Number of Active Applications and Services article in last week's issue:

What would have been very helpful in the article is a list of potential services that could be disabled. I personally have disabled a number of services that provide no added value to my present setup. Newbies would be hard pressed to choose which services are absolutely necessary and those that could be discontinued.

I found an website, BlackViper (http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm), to be very helpful at explaining what job each service performs. He has pages for WIN2000 and VISTA too.

Thanks for the information, Tom. I've been aware of Black Viper's site for a long time (you can search for Black Viper and blackviper.com on TerrysComputerTIps.com using the searchbar below and find some articles that recommend it).

However, his site has been down for over a year — I see that my July 25, 2005 newsletter mentioned that it wasn't up and had an "under construction" page.

With his site down, the best alternative was to use the Internet Wayback Machine to access the archives of his site. I don't know of any other sites that have such comprehensive tips and guides to Windows XP services.

I'm very happy to see that it's back up again. This site is a great resource for information on Windows services, what they do and which ones can be safely disabled.
