7.  Feedback from Readers

Clif, author of Clif Notes Newsletter, wrote me about his April 29th Clif Notes Newsletter issue:

In your most recent letter [my April 29th online newsletter - Terry] you mention Cookies. I agree with your claims and I handle them exactly the same way.

I posted a snippet from that article in my newsletter this week.

Thanks, Clif. I don't think I have ever found an experienced PC user who is worried about cookies. But, since the anti-spyware applications all seem to class many cookies as threats, a lot of less-experienced users are misled.

One of my most frustrating experiences was running Norton Antivirus on a club member's computer. She hadn't scanned in a long time and had two large drives that were pretty full, so it took about 4 hours that day. Norton kept saying that it found a security risk, found another security risk, etc. Finally, the program finished — and all it had found were cookies.

Reader Jack Carmena wrote about the same April 29th issue,

Very informative and educational issue this week on temp. files, passwords, cookies, etc.
Thanks,
jnc

Sometimes I get questions from readers that need help — but don't think to give me enough information to be able to help. Here's one I received this week:

can you tell me why my computer is running slow i have all the security in my computer sothere is no virus,it takes ages for my computer to get up and running is there something i can do to speed it up
thanks

She did not give me enough information to even guess. Here are some possibilities:

1) You're might be running an old computer that can't run today's applications
2) You might need more memory because of the programs you're running
3) You might be clobbered with adware/spyware applications that are automatically starting and slowing down your machine

Notice that she did not tell me what speed computer you have, its operating system, how much RAM memory in the computer. She said "i have all the security in my computer" but didn't tell me what security programs you're running.

She should be running a two-way firewall, an anti-spyware/anti-adware program -- one that runs all the time -- as well as running an anti-virus program.

My choices for those three all have free full-function trials:

I like to respond to requests from subscribers — but you have to give me enough details for the response to be meaningful.

Also, please identify yourself by name when you write with a question. If you don't want your name in the newsletter, be sure to mention that in your email.
