7.  What I Hate About New Program Versions

Whenever I have a program that I use frequently, I have modified certain of its settings to be just the way I like them.

Whether that's adding a SaveAs button and a PrintTo button to Word, Excel and Powerpoint or setting my home page in a web browser, I've set the program (within its capabilities) to do what I want.

The problem with new program versions is that even new optionalfeatures always seem to be activated in the release. I'd rather they include a Read Me file, or even open up a web browser and te;; me about the new features. That way, I can activate the features if I wish. In this case, I'm not upset with Microsoft — it's the latest version of one of the add-ons to Firefox and the latest version of Opera that roused my ire.

While Microsoft has just added Tabs to their Internet Explorer browser as of version 7, Opera and firefox have had tabs for a long time.

I've mentioned before that my favorite Firefox extension (add-on) was called Tab Mix Plus. It does a lot of things, but most importantly for me, it has an "Undo Close Tab" function. Did you ever close a window or a tab &mdash and then immediately say "OOPS!" If so, the Undo Close Tab function can help, if it was a tab.

In the version that they released to work with Firefox 2.0, they added other new function. Of course, one of these messed with one of my favorite settings.

Opera's latest version changed the default upon program start to be to open the most recent web page. The former default (and the one everyone else uses) is to open the Home page. Of course, I can go into Tools / Preferences / Startup and change it from "Continue from the last time" to "Start with home page."

It's great that they made these options. However, presuming to change the defaults (or reset them back to the original program defaults, in some cases, is not nice.
