7.  HOWTO: Unsubscribing From Newsletters

If you ever want to unsubscribe from my Terry's Computer Tips email newsletter — or anyone else's newsletter, for that matter — or if you read your emails via a web email service provider such as Gmail, Netscape/AOL, Excite, or any others that have a "Mark As Spam" button, — please be very careful and courteous to other subscribers.

All too often, the web email services put a Mark as Spam button next to the Delete button. But, these two buttons have very different effects.

If you click on the Mark as Spam button, either intentionally or accidentally, it tells the ISP that it should consider that email to be spam.

This is not the same thing as saying "I'm tired of this newsletter" or "I want to unsubscribe" or "I don't have time to read this."

The ISP files a complaint report with the ISP or mailing service that actually processed the original email. Sure, you might get unsubscribed by doing this, but that's only a side-effect.

The button also can cause other subscribers to miss their emails, as the ISP takes your accidental click (or intentional click) as a guide to tell it what is spam and what isn't.

As with most emails sent via email service companies, each of my newsletter has an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email. Just click on it to unsubscribe immediately. It's that easy.

As you might guess from this article, this week I had someone unsubscribe by clicking the "Mark as Spam" button. I've also had subscribers click on the Mark as Spam button by accident.
